Gabriel Agbonlahor has issued an apology to Ben White after calling the Arsenal defender ‘overrated’ and ‘absolutely dreadful’.
White has impressed on the right side of Arsenal’s defence this season and delivered another commanding display in the Gunners’ 3-2 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.
Before the start of the new campaign, Agbonlahor slammed White’s first season at Arsenal following his £50m move from Brighton, claiming that the 25-year-old lacked pace and aggression.
‘For me, Ben White is very overrated, I watched him against Newcastle towards the end of the season and he was absolutely dreadful,’ Agbonlahor said.
‘He lacks pace, he lacks aggression. Yes, he’s good on the ball but he’s not a defensive midfielder, he’s a centre-half.’
But following Arsenal’s win over Liverpool which has kept them top of the Premier League, Agbonlahor has revised his verdict on White.
‘I want to apologise to Ben White,’ Agbonlahor told Football Insider.
‘I have given him a bit of stick recently, in the past year, but he’s been outstanding at right-back.
‘Nothing gets past him and he’s decent on the ball as well.
‘He could be one of those players that you look at and say he’s a right-back now. Going forward, he’s a right-back who can fill in at centre-back.Credit to Ben White because he’s proved me wrong.’
