The addition of Leandro Trossard has tempered somewhat the disappointment of Arsenal missing out on Mykhailo Mudryk.

“We are really happy to have him,” said Mikel Arteta who didn’t reveal how happy he would have been to land Mudryk.

Trossard believes his versatility is what persuaded Arsenal to shell out £21m plus add-ons on the Belgian and already has his eye on the number 10 role.

“If I were to choose [position], behind the striker,” he said.

However, despite the January window still having a week or so to run, Gunners fans are already looking ahead to the summer judging by their Rank Your Targets results in which a clear frontrunner emerged. Despite most of the votes being cast before the addition of Trossard, similar alternatives such as Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Alexis Mac Allister trailed some way behind the number one transfer priority, Declan Rice.

The West Ham midfielder looks set to leave the Irons at the close of the season in pursuit of silverware. Arsenal’s standing at the top of the Premier League has put them among the frontrunners to secure his signature and Rice is said to have privately talked up the Gunners, fuelling optimism that he could land there in the summer.
