Courtois’ gesture to the fan who called him a mercenary at the derby: Pointed to his Champions League tattoo

Derbies tend to be very acrimonious matches, and this one was no exception after all the controversy generated in the previous days with Vinicius.

All eyes were on the Brazilian player, but during the match Thibaut Courtois was involved in an episode with an Atletico Madrid fan who called him a mercenary.

It was the first time that the Real Madrid goalkeeper had visited Atletico with a Champions League winner’s medal in his cabinet, a trophy that he lost in the 2014 final to Los Blancos as a Rojiblanco player.

After his incredible display in the final in Paris against Liverpool, the Belgian tattooed the trophy on his arm, and that’s exactly what he showed to that Atletico fan who was yelling at him, as seen by GOL Play’s cameras.

Atletico Madrid’s statement on the legends’ plaques

Because of controversies like this, Atletico decided to incorporate the option of removing the plaque of some players. This was the statement made by Atletico point by point.

The current name ‘Legend’s Path’ is changed to Centenary Players’ Path’, so that the new name reflects more accurately what this space is intended to be, a place of recognition and gratitude to all those players who at some point in our history wore our shirt for a certain number of matches. This change will be implemented for the first league match in our stadium.
The objective and numerical criteria to be included in this path is maintained, being essential to have played a minimum of 100 official matches with the Atletico Madrid men’s or women’s first team.
The plaque of those players who have passed the established criteria will be installed only when they have already terminated their contractual relationship with Atletico Madrid.
